How to Help a Dog Suffering With Skin Allergies

Dog Skin Allergies

All dogs scratch occasionally, but if your dog seems to scratch constantly, it may be a sign that he is suffering with some type of allergy. Some of these conditions may be easily cured, but dogs with pollen or environmental allergies may require treatment throughout their lives.

Dog Skin Allergies

Skin inflammation is common for dogs with allergies and may cause them to scratch, lick, chew or rub their faces obsessively. In order to bring the misery under control, the owner must be committed to prompt attention to skin flare-ups, effective parasite control and certain simple home strategies. Here are some ways to get started.

Dog Skin Allergies

Control fleas. Your dog's veterinarian will be able to provide the most effective treatment for your pet. Sometimes this may involve a flea problem within your home. If so, the vet should be able to recommend useful treatments or you may need to engage a professional insect/pest control service. Bathe your dog. Oftentimes a cool bath with an oatmeal shampoo will give your dog some relief. You should be able to do this up to twice a week. If the skin irritation is more severe, the veterinarian might prescribe an antibiotic shampoo for you to use. Clothing for your dog. This might sound strange, but a close-fitting t-shirt or bodysuit made out of a light fabric can keep the allergens that are irritating your dog away from his skin. It will also help prevent your dog from gnawing or biting an irritation and turning it into a full-blown open wound. Food for your dog. If your dog has a food allergy, you can work with the veterinarian to find a specialty pet food or even a home-prepared diet that will help relieve the symptoms.

Dog Skin Allergies

Don't hesitate to take action now. If your dog is experiencing symptoms of allergies, he is probably miserable. Since he is a member of the family, you will want to give him some relief as soon as possible.

Dog Food Skin Allergy

Dog Skin Allergies

Have you noticed your dog scratching at a particularly are a lot recently? Perhaps your dog has even been biting at an area and is beginning the lose hair. If you have been noticing this then there is a chance that your dog may be suffering from a skin allergy that has been set off by an allergy to something in their dog food.

Dog Skin Allergies

While treating this condition is very easy, actually diagnosing it can be very confusing. These symptoms can be caused by food allergies, inhalant allergies, or even a flea allergy. The first two will be the most common however. The major difference between both of these is that a inhalant allergy is seasonal most of the time because it is usually caused by a plant of tree. Other symptoms that are common of this allergy are frequent ear infections that don't clear up quickly and hot spots. Ear infections are actually pretty easy to spot. You will probably notice that their ears are extremely dirty. If the infection is bad enough you might even smell something like vinegar when you are close to the dog's head.

Dog Skin Allergies

If your dog is suffering from a food allergy it probably isn't your fault. Large breeds of dogs are more likely than others to get food allergies. Breeds like German shepherds, Dachshunds, cocker spaniels, rex cats, and retrievers are far more likely to get allergies. It is theorized that this is because they have a slower metabolism. Allergies can also be genetic. Your dog may have simply just inherited the allergy from one of its parents.

Dog Skin Allergies

If your dog has been scratching at an area, or you noticed anything particularly unusual then you should consider if they have a dog food skin allergy. If they do, then treating it will be pretty easy. All you will have to do is switch them to a dog food that they have never had made with ingredients you know they aren't allergic to. The first step in this process is to read over the ingredients that are present in the dogs food or foods that they are eating right now. It will likely be a meat or grain they are allergic to. You then need to pick a hypoallergenic or organic dog food that is made with things you know your dog hasn't eaten and isn't allergic to. Most dogs are allergic to beef, so you could try something like rabbit. You then need to start the dog on an elimination diet.

Hypoallergenic Dogs - The Perfect Match For Allergy Sufferers?

Dog Skin Allergies

With pproximately 10% of Americans suffering from allergies, and at least one dog living in almost 50% of US homes, if you do the math you'll see that there's a lot of demand for dogs who are less likely to produce an allergic reaction in the humans it shares it's life with!

Dog Skin Allergies

What exactly are 'hypoallergenic dogs'?

Dog Skin Allergies

Well, first of all they're NOT allergy free dogs! There is no such thing. But they are dogs from breeds that have been proven to produce a less severe allergic response in humans. In some cases, and in some people, they may not cause any allergic reaction at all. Whether or not someone has an allergic reaction to a particular dog breed is often very specific to that individual, and even to a particular dog within a breed.

Dog Skin Allergies

Allergy to dog hair or dog dander?

Contrary to popular belief, it's not necessarily dog hair that causes you to sneeze and your eyes to water. In fact, dog dander (tiny flakes of dead skin) and dog saliva, are much more likely to cause your symptoms. Of course, dog hair does play a role, as the more hair a dog sheds, the more dander he sheds too. You may not see the dander, but you will see the hair.

Hypoallergenic Breeds

There is a pretty good-sized list of dog breeds generally considered to be hypoallergenic. These breeds are more likely to produce limited or reduced allergic reactions in people with dog allergies.

But it's important to remember that each dog breed, (and each individual dog within that breed), and human allergy sufferer, is a unique combination. Just because you allergic cousin has no problems with her little Maltese, it doesn't necessarily mean that a Maltese is right for you.

Before deciding on a puppy or dog from a particular breed, it's advisable to try a 'trial run' if at all possible. Visit the breeder that you're buying from and spend some time around the dogs before you commit. If you can't go to the breeder, at the very least try and find some exposure to the breed you're interested in (maybe through friends or relatives), so that you can guage your response. If you're getting a dog from an animal shelter or rescue, ask if you can take him home for a few days to see how you react. Many shelters allow this.

Some of the more popular hypoallergenic dog breeds include:

Airedale Terrier

Basenji

Bedlington Terrier

Bouvier des Flandres

Cairn Terrier

Chihuahua

Chinese Crested (Powder Puff and Hairless varieties)

Cockapoo

Coton De Tulear

Italian Greyhound

Labradoodle

Maltese

Malti-Poo

Old English Sheepdog

Poodle (and most Poodle mixes such as Labradoodle, Malti-Poo etc.)

Schnauzer (all sizes)

Yorkshire Terrier

Breeds Better Avoided!

Although, this is not written in stone, there are some dog breeds that have been shown more likely to produce an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.

Heavy shedders such as Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers are among these 'trigger breeds', some of the others include :

Afghan Hound

Basset Hound

Dachshund

Doberman Pinscher

German Shepherd

Springer Spaniel

It would be a perfect world if every dog-lover could have the dog of his/her dreams! Although this may not be practical, or possible for all allergy sufferers, if you use common sense and are willing to investigate, explore and compromise, there is often an answer to your dilemma among the hypoallergenic dogs of this world.

Dog Skin Allergies

The symptoms of food allergy

Dog Skin Allergies

One thing to know why you think you have a food allergy. Manypeople do not understand what this is and often misdiagnose themselves. Here are several symptoms that should prompt you to go and have a series of either skin testing or blood testing done to not only confirm that you indeed have an allergy but also distinguish which foods you are actually allergic to. This list of symptoms will fit no matter which of the two kinds of food allergies you suffer from.

A runny nose during or immediately following eating. A feeling of continuous tiredness even after having a good night sleep. Constantly getting headaches within an hour of eating. An upset stomach and possible diarrhea after eating. Skin eruptions

If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms you should definitely seek medical advice.

Mild or Severe Allergies

The two kinds of food allergies are mild and severe. If you suffer from a mild food allergy you will experience several of the symptoms above however they may only be an inconvenience and something that you can learn to live with.

The severe food allergy is a different problem. If you have a severe allergy then you will also have respiratory problems which can be anything from the swelling of your throat or an asthma effect involving the inability to breathe properly. If you are diagnosed with a severe food allergy you will most likely need to carry an epi-pen for on the spot emergency treatment while waiting for medical assistance to arrive.

Treatment for Food Allergies

It does not matter which level of severity you suffer with when it comes to food allergies; there is no cure for them. The only sure treatment for them right now is by avoiding all food that has the type or types of food you are allergic to. There are some clinical studies in the process of testing allergy shots but as of now there are no remedies available.

One positive aspect is that many children will often times grow out of their allergies and have no long term effects from them. There is very little data currently available for those who began to suffer allergies as an adult so it is unclear if they will go away as quickly as they showed up.

Dog Allergies Are Making My Dog Lick And Scratch Herself Silly

Dog Skin Allergies

Poor Annie.

Dog Skin Allergies

For the first 12 years of her life she was as normal as most dogs. That is to say she spent her days in search of the doggy basics: food, walk, play time and loving. Not to mention the never ending hunt for the single best place to pee or poop.

Dog Skin Allergies

Then about a year ago Annie began to develop dog allergies. At first we thought she had fleas. We diligently applied Frontline, gave her flea baths and combed and brushed her but this did not relieve her itching for long. Over time she developed red and scaling sores on her belly and especially on the butt near her tail.

Dog Skin Allergies

Her licking and scratching went on every day and, worse, into the night. It was not uncommon to be awakened by the sound of her licking. She, and I, needed relief.

We visited the vet and she informed us that dog allergies occur in over 40% of the dogs that seeks vet treatment for itching and scratching. She explained that these allergies are caused by any number of food or airborne allergens.

The first issue was to get her licking and scratching under control.

To do this involved a three step approach. The first step was a medicated bath that helped sooth the skin. Step two was to start Annie on a course of antibiotics to kill the sores that had formed on her body. Finally, to control the scratching, a 10 day steroid dose was prescribed. In terms of side effects the main issue was the steroids that caused her to drink a ton more water than normal and to be hungry all of the time. Fortunately she did not start to exhibit personality changes brought on by mood swings caused by the steroids.

Within 3 days Annie was feeling much better. She was better but the cause of her dog allergies was not yet understood.

Was it in her food? Was it in our home? Was she allergic to our cat?

The search for answers is a long process much like getting to the bottom of a human allergy problem. There are many approaches to take but we chose to focus on the food related possibilities. The first step was to eliminate all the store bought food from her diet. But wait, this can have unforeseen side effects. You see as bad as dog food is, given the fact that it contains simply unknown parts of unknown animals, there has been enough testing to know that from a nutritional standpoint it does provide the right blend of nutrients to keep our normally healthy dogs healthy. So by feeding a diet of homemade food we effectively removed the potential allergen but compromised her health. An alternative solution was to move to a vegetarian based dog food and get the animal impurities out of her system.

The follow up step was to do lots of research, as even the best vet in town does not have the time to dedicate to understanding the issue as much as the dogs owner. The internet contains a huge database of information on dog allergies as written by drug companies, veterinarians, pet owners, and complied into many useful sites.

Don't let your best friend suffer. Start by getting some help for your dog today and then do your homework. Making your dog feel better will make you feel better.

Guide to Removing Mats and Tangles From Your Dog

Dog Skin Allergies

If you have a long-haired breed of dog you need to know the difficulties that may mats and tangles. These balls of fur, if it can not be connected to the ulcers, skin problems and skin damage requiring a complete oscillation of the Fells lead to the solution of the problem. With a good maintenance program more mats and tangles stopped before they become problems, but every dog can be matted or matted hair after a long day in the woods or a swim inSee.

Dog Skin Allergies

There are many ways of rugs and mats that are relatively painless for your dog to be ready and relatively easy to do at home. They are the best ways to eliminate clutter:

Dog Skin Allergies

· Use a comb or brush off pin on the outside of the ball on the dog's body of work. Work with small amounts of hair instead of working around the node, or confusion at a time.

Dog Skin Allergies

· Use a good quality Detangler developed specifically for dogs. There are many brands sold online or in pet stores that are safe and gentle for dog's hair and skin.

· Baby oil can also be used if you don't have a detangler solution available. Use only a very small amount and gently work through with the fingers. Do not use a circular motion as this may increase the amount of hair in the tangle rather than decrease it.

· Spraying a gentle coat of mink oil over the whole coat will prevent the coat from tangling up again after you have removed the knots.

· Often the mat is formed around a foreign object like a twig, burr or even a piece of a stick. Be careful not to catch this object with the comb as this will be very painful for the dog. If the object is very imbedded in the hair gently try to detangle it using your finger to keep as much hair intact as possible. Only as a last resort cut the patch hair, using the scissors so the blades are pointed away from the dog's body. Never cut into the dog as the possibility to damage the skin is simply too great, even with blunt ended scissors.

· Always check for mats in places such as the armpits of the dog on both the front and back legs, behind the legs, around the collar, behind the ears and on the "leggings" long hairs of the back legs.

· If the dog is becoming sensitive in one area allow the detangler to sit on the hair and move to another spot. Irritating the skin will only make the dog less cooperative.

Clean and well-conditioned, healthy hair is much easier to work with than dead or dry hair. A good grooming routine will help minimize tangles and mats and will keep your pet looking tiptop.
